What the 2010 Murchiealago LP640 is was summed up best in a Los Angeles Times review, "...the most heinously irresponsible, developmentally arrested, awesomely cool sports car the world has ever known."
The Murchiealago is, by longstanding Lamborghini tradition, named after a famous Spanish fighting bull. The sports cars namesake survived 28 wounds inflicted by the sword of matador Rafael Molina Sanchez in 1879. In a very rare gesture of respect for the bull, Sanchez spared its life.As a replacement for Lamborghini's 11-year-old Diablo the car went on sale in 2002, identified only as the Murchiealago with a mid-engine design, a 6.2-liter V12 and 4 wheel drive. LP640 designated models followed and in 2004, Lamborghini rolled out the LP640-4 roadster.
The latest model introduced is the LP670-4SV (SuperVeloce) and is widely expected to be the final incarnation of the Murchiealago prior to Lamborghini introducing a new model sometime in 2010.An aluminum 6.496 Liter (396.4 cu in) 60-degree V12 provides power to the SuperVeloce This engine develops 670 bhp @ 8000 rpm with torque rated at 487 ft lbs to the wheels at 6500 rpm. Top speed is 213 mph with a 0-60 mph speed of 3.1 seconds. Two spoiler options are available for the SV with the smaller option allowing the 213 mph top speed while the larger one creates more down force that enhances handling but gives away 4 mph in speed. The SV has a reworked body on the front and rear, which distinguishes it from the 640. A reworking on all components on the car reduced curb weight by 220 lbs, which gives it a phenomenal power to weight ratio of 5.1 lbs per hp.
Returning to the LP640, it is the number one exotic sports car for 2010 according to U.S. News and World Report. The U.S. News staff compared seven sports cars with eleven independent reviews for each car. The Murciealago won easily. The two negative ratings for the LP640 were difficulty entering and leaving the vehicle due to its scissor doors and poor visibility to the rear. Not much of a trade off is it.
